Powder Coating Services
in Derbyshire
Durable, professional powder coating for metal components, fabrications and industrial equipment across Derbyshire and the East Midlands.
What Is
Powder Coating?
Powder coating is a durable and environmentally friendly finishing process used to protect and enhance metal components. It is widely used on industrial equipment, metal fabrications, gates and railings, automotive parts, alloy wheels and architectural metalwork.
At RPT Engineering Ltd in Somercotes, we provide professional powder coating services for trade, commercial and private customers across Derbyshire and the East Midlands.
Our in-house facility allows us to handle preparation, coating and finishing under one roof, ensuring faster turnaround times and complete quality control.
Why Powder Coat Instead of Paint?
Traditional spray painting relies on liquid coatings and solvents which can chip, fade or wear over time. Powder coating provides a more durable and consistent alternative.
Superior durability compared to wet paint
Resistant to chips, scratches and corrosion
Consistent coverage on complex metal shapes
Environmentally friendly process with no solvents
Long-lasting finish suitable for indoor and outdoor use
Even coating thickness
The Powder Coating Process
Surface Preparation
Preparation is the most important stage in achieving a durable coating. Before powder coating, the metal surface must be completely clean. This may involve shot blasting to remove rust and old coatings, degreasing to remove oils and contaminants, or chemical pre-treatment where required. This stage ensures the powder bonds correctly to the metal.
Powder Application
Powder coating uses an electrostatic application process. The powder particles are electrically charged and sprayed onto the grounded metal component. This causes the powder to evenly attach to the surface, allowing consistent coverage across edges, corners and complex shapes.
Oven Curing
After application, the coated component is placed in a curing oven. The heat melts the powder and creates a strong chemical bond with the metal surface, forming a smooth and durable coating. Once cured, the finish is ready for use.
Thermoset Coatings
Thermoset powders are the most commonly used type. Once cured, they form a permanent chemical bond which cannot be melted again. This makes them ideal for applications exposed to weather, heat and heavy use such as gates, railings and automotive parts.
What Items Can Be Powder Coated?
Powder coating is suitable for a wide range of metal components including:
- Gates & Railings
- Alloy & Steel Wheels
- Car & Bike Parts
- Garden Furniture
- Industrial Machinery
- Structural Steelwork
- Architectural Metal
- Restoration Projects
Alloy Wheel
Refurbishment
We also provide alloy wheel refurbishment services. As RPT Engineering Ltd is part of Swift Tyre Repairs, we can arrange tyre removal and refitting as part of the process, making refurbishment quicker and easier for customers.
Wheels can be stripped, blasted and powder coated to restore their appearance and durability.
Durability and Lifespan
Powder coating is one of the most durable finishing systems available for metal components. When applied correctly to properly prepared metal, the coating can last 10 to 20 years or more, depending on the environment and the coating specification used.
