Shot Blasting Services
in Derbyshire
Professional abrasive blasting for trade and commercial customers across Derbyshire and the East Midlands.
What is
Shot Blasting?
Shot blasting (also known as sand blasting or abrasive blasting) uses high-pressure air to propel abrasive media against a metal surface at speed. The result is a clean, bare metal surface with all rust, old paint, scale, and contaminants completely removed.
It is the most effective method of surface preparation before powder coating, painting, or applying any protective finish. A properly blasted surface ensures maximum adhesion and a longer-lasting result.
At RPT Engineering Ltd, we have provided professional shot blasting services from our Somercotes facility for more than 30 years, working with trade customers, fabricators, commercial clients and the general public across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, and the wider East Midlands.
Why Use Shot Blasting?
Removes rust, old paint, mill scale and corrosion completely
Leaves a clean, keyed surface ready for coating or painting
Stronger bond for powder coating compared to chemical stripping
Faster and more consistent than manual preparation methods
Suitable for complex shapes, welds, and hard-to-reach areas
No harsh chemicals — uses abrasive media only

Paint Removal &
Coating Stripping
Some components require coatings to be removed before blasting or refinishing. At RPT Engineering Ltd we use several processes depending on the material and application.
Our facilities include pyrolysis ovens which burn away paint and coatings, as well as a hot strip tank using alkaline solutions to remove paint gently without damaging the underlying metal.
These methods allow us to safely strip coatings from a wide range of components before blasting or refinishing.
Pyrolysis Ovens
Thermal stripping that safely bakes off layers of old powder coating and industrial paint.
Hot Strip Tank
Chemical alkaline stripping for a gentle yet effective removal of coatings from sensitive metal surfaces.

Shot Blasting FAQs
What is the difference between shot blasting and sand blasting?
They are effectively the same process. Sand blasting is the common term most people know, but modern facilities use steel shot or grit rather than sand due to health and safety regulations around silica dust. The result is the same — a clean, stripped metal surface.
Do I need shot blasting before powder coating?
It is strongly recommended. Shot blasting removes all rust, old coatings, and contamination, which gives the powder coat a clean, keyed surface to bond to. This significantly extends the life of the finish.
How long does shot blasting take?
Most jobs are turned around within 2–3 working days. Larger or more complex items may take longer. Contact us for a specific timescale on your project.
Do you offer collection and delivery?
Yes. We offer collection and delivery across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire, and the wider East Midlands. Get in touch to arrange.
Can you shot blast and powder coat in the same visit?
Yes. We handle both processes in-house, so your metalwork can be blasted and coated without leaving the site.
